S.P.A.C.E.d

Here are a few pics (never one of me) from S.P.A.C.E., the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo, in Columbus. Above is the booklet I put together full of art by yours truly from the past few years. They turned out all nice and fancy-like: paperback, 40 pages, full color, and signed by me! Only $17 (plus a buck for shipping)! If anyone is interested drop me a line. They're also available directly from the Blurb.com online store, but you have to pay like eight bucks in shipping and they aren't personalized. So don't do that, you know, if you were, like, thinking about it.

Below are my travelling companions, Matt Feazell of Cynicalman fame, and Suzanne Baumann of Fridge Mag.net! They let me use a square foot of table space to sell my stuff. Thanks! Check out their sites, you won't be disappointed!

I picked up a few noteworthy items while I was there too. First is Chad the Fat Kid by friend Erik Hodson. He started as a web comic and now he's a book!

Next up: Bo Nanas by John Kovaleski. John had his strip syndicated in Europe and Asia.



And Then One Day by Ryan Claytor. Loved the design and packaging of all his stuff.



The Claws Come Out by Pat Lewis. Slick comics and storytelling. Lots of fun.



There was a lot of other awesome people that I met and nifty stuff I picked up, including Pam Bliss' way cool Coelacanth tee shirt. These few were unfortunately the only things that I could remember where to find online off the top of my head, so sorry if I've left you out.

... Equals Dr. Sketchy on Post-it Notes!

I had a little extra time and didn't want to waste it reading or making the world a better place or something, so I went over to Metro D's Dr. Sketchy blog and started drawing all the models going back to the beginning. Crap, shoulda done one of Molly Crabapple too. Maybe later. I ran out of Post-its.

Sketchy Two-fer-One

A post Tax Day Dr. Sketchy was held last night at the Belmont in Hamtramck. This time we were treated to two spectacular models from Spag Burlesque. The crowd was a little thin at the start, but soon filled in with the regular art monkeys. Poor lighting made for a challenge in picking out what watercolors I was using at first, but Sean got the lights turned up and I could tell blue from green at last. I even managed to fill up the remainder of my Moleskine watercolor sketchbook. And to top it off? The Red Wings beat Columbus in game 1 in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs! Woooo! (Yes Tammie, I really want them to win, I just don't think they're going all the way this year. Call me a stick in the mud)!!

Tomorrow I'm headed down to Columbus for S.P.A.C.E., the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo. I've got some wares to peddle, which I'll fill y'all in about later. I'll be sharing some table space with the great Matt Feazell and the amazing Suzanne Baumann.

Maybe I'll wear my Red Wings jersey so I can get beat up while I'm down there in Blue Jackets territory.

Makin' the cut

I'm trying to come up with some original Ellie On Planet X for my upcoming book of art that I mentioned below. Here are a few I did that I'm not really sure about. Something I've been painfully aware of is that I have a portfolio full of characters for this story, but none of them seem to be doing anything. They just kind of stand around and pose. So I really need to drop them into an environment where they interact with one another or there's a story going on. The illustration below tries to do that but I'm not sure if the joke is clear. Regardless, I don't think either of these will make the cut. Gotta come up with something though. I'd like to have these printed before SPACE! (Small Press and Alternative Arts Expo in Columbus, OH) in April!

Look-y-Look

I've been thinking about putting out a book for sale full of illustrations and sketches from the past few years. Paperback, maybe about forty pages, full color, seven by seven in size. Here's a cover I worked up for it.

Sketchy In Action!

Dr. Sketchy was visited by Metro Times photographer Kelly Lockwood who took some snaps for this week's Velvet Rope feature. My mug didn't make it into the printed version (I'm just not pretty enough), but here I am, pencil in mouth, bowing before my muse. Look at that concentration.

Here's our model Demonique in her boxing gear. You can almost make out Azucena peeking out from behind the speaker, sitting with Matt Feazell.

My t-shirt made it into the Times though. I'm representin'!
